The Impregnable City of Nine Gates

“AshtachakrA navadvArA DevAnAm puroyodhyA | TasyA hiranyaye koshah Swargo jyotishAvritah”

“Nine-doored, with eight lotus-wheels, is the impregnable city of the Gods. In that is a golden vessel, heaven-covered with light.”

— Atharva Veda 10.2.6

The Nine Gates

Two Eyes

1 & 2
Element:Light / Tejas
Deity:Surya (Sun)
Sense:Rupa (Form/Sight)

Visual electromagnetic spectrum — sunlight, starlight. The body receives photon information from celestial bodies through these gates.

Two Nostrils

3 & 4
Element:Air / Vayu
Deity:Vayu (Wind)
Sense:Gandha (Smell)

Chemical composition of atmosphere — directly samples the elemental composition of Earth's surface environment. Prana (life force) enters primarily through these gates.

Two Ears

5 & 6
Element:Space / Akasha
Deity:Dik (Directions)
Sense:Shabda (Sound)

Acoustic vibration from the environment. Vedic texts posit that Akasha (space) itself vibrates — connecting auditory sense to the cosmic substrate. Infrasound from geological activity detectable.

Mouth

7
Element:Water / Apas
Deity:Agni (Fire)
Sense:Rasa (Taste)

Entry of matter into the body — transformation of external elements into internal energy. The fire of digestion (Jatharagni) transforms cosmic elements into biological fuel.

Anus

8
Element:Earth / Prithvi
Deity:Mrityu (Death)
Sense:Apana (Downward force)

Exit gate for transformed matter. Returns processed Earth elements to the Earth cycle. In Ayurveda, the Apana Vayu governs downward bodily forces and is linked to lunar gravitational effects on body fluids.

Genitals

9
Element:All five / Pancha bhuta
Deity:Prajapati (Creator)
Sense:Sparsha / Ananda

The gate of creation — replication of the cosmic pattern in a new individual. Vedic texts describe procreation as the most direct participation in the cosmic creative cycle. Modern genetics: DNA carries the entire information of an organism.

The Eight Chakras (Ashtachakra)

The Atharva Veda verse (10.2.6) also mentions “Ashtachakra” — eight lotus-wheels within the city. These are the eight primary energy centers within the body mapped by Vedic physiology, each corresponding to a nerve plexus and endocrine gland in modern anatomy.
